Governor Signs School Bus Background Check Expansion

A quiet Saturday at the statehouse produced one new law and one bill cleared for floor consideration. Both measures carry Republican sponsors and move through without significant controversy.

A quiet Saturday at the statehouse produced one new law and one bill cleared for floor consideration. Both measures carry Republican sponsors and move through without significant controversy.

Signed into Law

HB 1051 — Sponsored by Rep. Erica Layon (R), this law updates and expands criminal history records checks for school bus drivers and broadens which school transportation personnel are subject to those checks. School districts and transportation contractors will need to comply with the revised vetting requirements when hiring or retaining staff who transport students.

On the Move

SB 525 — Sponsored by Sen. Daniel Innis (R), this bill moves from committee to active status. It would raise the ceiling on state loan guarantees that can be outstanding at one time. State guarantees are used to back financing for projects such as affordable housing and economic development initiatives. The higher cap would give the state more flexibility to support such projects without requiring individual legislative approval for each guarantee. The bill now advances toward a floor vote.
